"Have you ever wondered if humans can peacefully coexist with wild animals in the city? Discover the wildlife stories featured in the Ranger Rick magazine, where the city life of red foxes in Whitehorse, Northern Canada, unfolds.
We often hear about encounters with wild boars and monkeys in Hong Kong. However, in the town of Whitehorse, it is common to see red fox families peacefully cohabitating with residents. Pictures in the magazine: little foxes playing in car parks and strolling alongside pedestrians, are remarkable that the citizens of Whitehorse welcome these foxes as their neighbors.
Nestled in the Yukon territory, Whitehorse is near to forests, mountains, and rivers—a suitable habitat for wild animals. But why do red foxes choose to live in urban spaces? It is because empty houses and concrete buildings in the town will serve as safe dens, especially for the young foxes. While red foxes are adept hunters in the wild, they are secured with the convenient source of food through leftovers from human activity.
Though we are mindful not to feed wild animals, the city life of red foxes prompts us to ponder the balance between urban development and preserving nature. It is a good topic to explore with children, sparking discussions on coexistence with wildlife. Let’s read the magazine to have a virtual visit to the fox town, where Felix, the little fox, tells their daily lives.
